How to Create MP3 Files from Wikipedia Articles

We’ve previously written about how to convert Wikipedia articles (or collections of articles) to eBooks you can read on mobile devices. If you travel a lot, you may want to listen to Wikipedia articles. Pediaphon provides a way to do this. To create an MP3 file from a Wikipedia article, go to http://www.pediaphon.org/~bischoff/radiopedia/index_en.html. Enter the search term for the article you want to convert in the edit box below e.g. “podcast”. NOTE: You need to enter the specific article name, or you will simply get an MP3 file of a page of links to possible matches for your search term. Go to Wikipedia first, find your article, and then enter the exact article name in the edit box. Select the type of voice from the voice drop-down list and the speed at which you want the voice to speak from the speaking speed drop-down list. Select MP3 download/Podcast/old iPhone/Shoutcast from the last drop-down list (other formats are also available). Click start.
A message displays while your MP3 is being generated.
When the file has been generated, a page displays providing links to the files.
To save the file to disk, right-click on the MP3 link and select Save Link As from the popup menu, and use the dialog box that displays to select a location for the file and to save it.
Now, you can copy the MP3 file to your mobile device and play it in any app that supports MP3 files.

The Pebble Smartwatch Launches an Attractive Steel Version

CES, the annual Consumer Electronics Show, is happening right now in Vegas, and How-To Geek has boots on the ground. The Pebble Smartwatch has launched a new version made from stainless steel instead of plastic. It’s stylish, sturdy, and does everything the old version did. The new steel model raises the price by another hundred dollars, so you’ll be dropping $250 on your Pebble Steel if you choose to get one — although that’s still cheap compared to most premium watches. This one is made from premium milled stainless steel and Gorilla Glass, comes in either black matte or stainless steel, and comes with both metal and leather bands. It’s also waterproof. Everything else works exactly the same as when we reviewed the regular Pebble model — which is an excellent smartwatch that most of the people on our team have switched to. You can hook it to either your Android or iPhone, all the alerts work really well either way. According to their product page, there are only a limited supply of Pebble Steel watches at this point, so if you want one, you’d better get in on the first wave or you might be waiting a while for them to get more in stock. Then again, CES will probably have a lot of new smartwatch announcements, so it might be worth waiting a few days before making a decision. If you do decide to get one, they’ll start shipping in February. Original Pebble on the left, Pebble Steel on the right It’s definitely much more attractive than the previous model, which felt a little cheap and plastic compared to a regular metal watch. We’re happy to see Pebble pushing the smartwatch market forward and setting the bar a little higher. Even if you don’t want to buy one now, innovation and competition mean good things for us, the consumers.

Toshiba Launches 13″ Intel Haswell Chromebook for $279

Toshiba announced their first Chromebook at CES yesterday, and it’s the first one with a 13.3-inch display, priced under 300 bucks. Haswell processor and nine hours of battery life make it an interesting choice. We haven’t had a chance to get our hands on the new unit yet, so we’re not sure how the keyboard feels or what the display looks like in person. It’s a standard 1366×768 resolution panel, so the pixels will be slightly bigger than the other 11-inch Chromebooks that have the same resolution, but it should also be a little easier to see the screen this way. This unit weighs 3.3 pounds and is 0.8-inch thick. It’s got only 2 GB of RAM compared to some of the other models on the market with 4 GB, but a Chromebook doesn’t really need a ton of memory to begin with. 16 GB of solid state storage, two USB 3.0 ports, HDMI output, memory card reader, and dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi. The new Chromebook is available starting February 16th everywhere.
